  • 1 medium head cabbage, chopped Green cabbage works best
  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey Can also use chicken, pork, or plant-based alternatives
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheese for topping (optional) Consider mozzarella for a mild flavor or cheddar for sharper taste

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef or turkey. Cook until browned, breaking it into small pieces.
  • Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until the onion is translucent.
  • Stir in the chopped cabbage to the skillet and cook for about 5 minutes, allowing it to begin wilting.
  • Mix in the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, paprika, salt, and pepper. Allow the mixture to cook for an additional 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Pour the meat and cabbage mixture into a greased baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  • If desired, sprinkle shredded cheese on top of the casserole for an extra layer of flavor.
  • Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. Reheat in the oven or microwave. This dish can also be frozen for longer storage.
