Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour if you prefer)
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2¼ teaspoons)
  • 1 cup milk, warmed should feel like warm bathwater
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs, beaten

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm milk with a sprinkle of sugar. Let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes until it’s frothy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened butter, sugar, and salt. Then add the eggs and the yeast mixture. Gradually incorporate the flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it for about 5 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If you’re using gluten-free flour, kneading isn’t necessary.
  • Place your dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size—usually about 1 to 1.5 hours.

Shaping and Baking

  • Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out into a large circle. Cut the dough into triangles, roll each triangle starting from the wide end to the tip, and place them on a baking sheet.
  • Cover the shaped rolls with a towel and let them rise again for about 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Brush with melted butter right out of the oven for extra flavor.

Notes

Make sure your milk is warm but not hot; too hot can kill the yeast. Always check expiration dates on your yeast for best results. Customize with sweet or savory fillings.
