  • 1 lb Ground lamb or beef (or turkey) You can use turkey for a lighter option.
  • 1 large Onion Chopped.
  • 2 cloves Garlic Minced.
  • 2 medium Carrots Diced.
  • 1 cup Frozen peas You can substitute with fresh peas.
  • 2 tbsp Tomato paste For depth of flavor.
  • 2 cups Gluten free broth Double check the label.
  • 2 tbsp Gluten free Worcestershire-style sauce or tamari Provides umami flavor.
  • 1 tbsp Cornstarch or arrowroot For thickening.
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Pepper
  • 1 tsp Thyme Fresh or dried.

Potato Topping Ingredients

  • 2 lbs Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes Peeled and cubed.
  • 4 tbsp Butter Use dairy-free butter if needed.
  • 1/2 cup Warm milk Use unsweetened plain dairy-free milk if needed.
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper
  • optional Sour cream or dairy-free sour cream For extra creaminess.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • In a large skillet, brown the ground meat over medium heat until well done. Drain excess fat.
  • Add onion and garlic, cooking until soft, about 5 minutes.
  • Stir in carrots, peas, tomato paste, gluten free broth, Worcestershire sauce, and seasonings. Let simmer until the mixture thickens.
  • In a separate pot, boil cubed potatoes in salted water until tender, then drain.
  • Mash the potatoes, adding butter, warm milk, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy.

Assembly

  • Spread the meat filling evenly into a baking dish.
  • Top with mashed potatoes using a spatula or spoon, smoothing out the surface.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until the top is golden.
  • Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a fun Halloween look, consider decorating with gluten free cracker tombstones on top and piping mashed potatoes to resemble 'graveyard mounds'.
