Onion Preparation

  • 2 large large onions Sweet onions work best
  • 1 cup buttermilk Can use non-dairy alternative like almond milk with a splash of vinegar

Breading Mixture

  • 1 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs Ensure they are gluten-free
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp paprika For a hint of smoky flavor
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • to taste salt
  • to taste pepper
  • 2 large eggs Beaten

Frying

  • 1 cup oil for frying Canola or vegetable oil

Preparation

  • Slice the onions into 1/4-inch thick rings and separate them. Soak them in a bowl of buttermilk for at least 30 minutes.

Breading Stations

  • In one bowl, whisk together the gluten-free flour, baking powder, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  • In a second bowl, beat the eggs until frothy.
  • In a third bowl, place the breadcrumbs.

Coat the Rings

  • Remove the onion rings from the buttermilk, allowing any excess to drip off.
  • Coat each ring in the flour mixture, dip in the beaten eggs, and finally coat with breadcrumbs, pressing the breadcrumbs onto the rings.

Frying

  • In a deep skillet, heat about an inch of oil over medium heat until it shimmers.
  • Carefully add the coated onion rings in batches, cooking for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.

Serving

  • Transfer the onion rings to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

Choose sweet onions like Vidalia or Walla Walla for the best flavor. Don’t rush the buttermilk soak for maximum tenderness and flavor. Watch the oil temperature to avoid soggy rings. Experiment with seasonings for different flavors.
