Ingredients

Onion Rings

  • 1 large large onion, sliced into rings Choose sweet onions like Vidalia for a milder flavor.

Batter Ingredients

  • 1 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour Ensure it is gluten-free.
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs Make sure they are gluten-free; panko is preferred for extra crunch.
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • to taste Salt and pepper

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup buttermilk A dairy-free alternative can be used.
  • 1 large egg
  • as needed Oil for frying Use enough oil for deep frying.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Slice the onion into rings, ensuring consistent thickness for even cooking.

Batter Preparation

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the gluten-free flour, baking powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  • In another bowl, whisk the buttermilk and egg until smooth.

Coating the Onion Rings

  • Dip each onion ring first into the buttermilk mixture, allowing excess to drip off, then into the flour mixture, ensuring a good coating.
  • After coating in flour, dip the rings back into the buttermilk and then roll them in breadcrumbs.

Frying

  • Heat oil in a deep skillet or fryer over medium heat.
  • Test the oil readiness by dropping a small piece of bread; it should sizzle.
  • Carefully place several coated onion rings into the hot oil, avoiding overcrowding.
  • Fry until golden brown, about 2 to 4 minutes per side.
  • Transfer the cooked onion rings to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Serving

  • Serve the onion rings hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

For best results, keep oil temperature consistent. Consider using panko breadcrumbs for an even crunchier texture. You can add cayenne pepper or smoked paprika for a spicy variation or grated cheese for cheesy onion rings.
