Instructions

Cooking the Pasta

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the gluten-free ziti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Sautéing the Aromatics

  • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until the onion is translucent and fragrant, about 3-5 minutes.

Browning the Meat

  • Add the ground turkey or beef to the skillet. Season with Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
  • Cook until the meat is browned and fully cooked, breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks.

Combining with Marinara Sauce

  • Pour in the marinara sauce, stirring to combine.
  • Let it simmer for about 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Mixing the Ricotta Filling

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, salt, and pepper gently until mixed well.

Assembling the Baked Ziti

  • In a large baking dish, spread half of the meat sauce on the bottom.
  • Layer half of the cooked ziti on top, followed by dollops of the ricotta mixture, and a sprinkle of mozzarella cheese.
  • Repeat the layers with the remaining sauce, ziti, and finish off with the rest of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top.

Baking the Ziti

  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and golden.

Garnishing and Serving

  • Let the baked ziti rest for about 10 minutes before serving.
  • Garnish with fresh basil leaves for an extra burst of flavor.

Notes

Use quality ingredients for the best flavor, monitor the pasta carefully while cooking, and let the baked ziti rest before serving for easier cutting. Variations include using vegetables instead of meat or adding red pepper flakes for some heat.
