Ingredients

Fritter Batter

  • 2 cups gluten-free all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¾ cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 medium apples, peeled and finely diced such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp
  • Oil for frying canola, vegetable, or any other preferred oil
  • Optional: Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

Prepare the Dough

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the gluten-free flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and then add the milk and sugar, mixing until well combined.

Combine Ingredients

  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. The batter should be thick but still smooth.
  • Gently fold in the diced apples, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the batter.

Heat the Oil

  • In a deep frying pan or pot, heat about 2 inches of oil over medium heat. Test the oil by dropping in a small spoonful of batter; if it bubbles and rises, the oil is ready.

Fry the Fritters

  • Use a large spoon or ice cream scoop to drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil. Fry in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.

Draining

  • Use a slotted spoon to remove the fritters from the oil and transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.

Serve

  • Dust the warm fritters with powdered sugar, if desired, and enjoy fresh out of the fryer with a warm drink.

Notes

To make your Gluten Free Apple Fritters a success, consider using firm apples like Granny Smith, maintaining the right oil temperature, and ensuring the batter is thick but pourable. Feel free to try variations such as adding a streusel topping, different spices, or nuts.
