Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F) Ensure it's warm, not hot.
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

Toppings

  • Toppings of your choice (sesame seeds, poppy seeds, etc.) Choose your favorite toppings.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it's frothy.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
  • Gradually add the dry mixture into the yeast mixture, stirring until a dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  • Once risen, punch down the dough. Divide it into 10 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then use your index finger to poke a hole through the center, forming the bagel shape.

Cooking

  • Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully drop in the bagels (2-3 at a time), boiling them for about 1 minute on each side.
  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Place the boiled bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush them with vegetable oil and sprinkle your chosen toppings.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Allow the bagels to cool on a wire rack before enjoying.

Notes

Check your yeast to ensure it's fresh; old yeast may not activate properly. Proper kneading is crucial for developing gluten, which gives the bagels their delightful chewy texture. For added flavor, add a tablespoon of baking soda or honey to the boiling water before cooking the bagels.
